Dealing with Post-relocation Homesickness

Relocating home to another city can be stressful. You can feel homesick, especially if it was the first time that you moved home.

Homesickness manifests itself in different feelings – fear of the unknown or sadness for all that is left behind. You long for the comfort of your old home and crave for the joy of being with your loved ones.

Homesickness is just an internal struggle we face as we learn to adjust to a new place. Facing your emotions and overcoming them can make you a stronger individual. We present you a few tips to manage the feeling of homesickness and get you through this uncomfortable period.

Recognize the source and deal with it

You can deal with your problems better once you have identified the source.

  • Underlying needs for connection and security give rise to homesickness. Furthermore, the loneliness and uncertainty in a new place adds to your misery.
  • Your loved ones are just a call away and you can instantly connect with them over a video call to share your experiences or feelings. Though it may not be as impactful as their physical presence, it can make you feel good.

Accept your feelings, but let it not define you.

  • Homesickness is situational and would be intense for a particular period till you get used to your new way of life. Feel your feelings, but don’t let it overpower you.
  • Work on detaching yourself from the past and accepting the new. Set your focus on what you can gain rather than what’s left behind, and you will find peace in your home again.

Stay healthy and get into a routine

  • Proper self-care can help you feel better during the transitional period. Eat healthy, stick to an exercise routine and get sufficient rest to feel upbeat and fresh. If you miss home food, ask your mother for her recipes and enjoy a good home cooked meal.
  • Keep yourself occupied with activities such as a motivational read, a long drive or a trip to the cinema to ward off negative thoughts.

Build new relationships

  • Meeting new people and hanging out with new friends can help you thrive in the new place. It is always good to form a new circle of support when you are far away from your family.
  • Join a networking group or get involved in a social activity to get connected to people you can talk to and rely upon.

Spend time outdoors

  • Being caged inside four walls will only increase your loneliness and you will miss experiencing the beauty around you.
  • Step out of the house, visit local attractions, or just walk around to explore the place. Hobbies like gardening, fishing, trekking can help you get close to nature and make the best out of your available time. The more activities outdoors, the more refreshed you feel.
